Too many commercial solar systems get treated like a one-time purchase: install, switch on, walk away. That mindset quietly erodes yield for years before anyone notices the shortfall on a balance sheet.
New Planet Energy’s five-year track record at Eagle Canyon Shopping Centre shows what disciplined operations and
maintenance (O&M) delivers instead: a solar asset that performs the way its business case promised.
The Eagle Canyon Case
Eagle Canyon Shopping Centre sits on a busy corner opposite Eagle Canyon Golf Estate in Roodepoort, anchored by Virgin Active and a SPAR superstore. For the landlord, the centre is one piece of a bigger portfolio play: diversification, market
resilience, and tight control over operating costs and business continuity for the building’s tenants.
The roof made the engineering straightforward: a large, low-pitch surface gave New Planet Energy room to design an efficient panel layout, and a single tie-in point simplified the electrical reticulation, cutting the losses that usually creep in over long AC cable runs. The 417kWp system was built in two phases and is tied into the site’s backup diesel generator, cutting fuel use during outages.
None of that holds up without the O&M behind it.
Our team runs daily remote monitoring, seasonally timed panel cleaning, and fast fault resolution to keep
downtime minimal. When Phase 1 output dipped in late 2025, that same monitoring flagged it early – the kind of catch a “et-and-forget” system simply misses.
The plant itself is owned through a multi-owner Power Purchase Agreement, with the shopping centre’s owner holding a stake in the entity that owns and operates it. That structure means the landlord shares directly in what the plant generates. A
different kind of skin in the game than a standard lease.
The New Planet Promise
From July 2021 to date, Eagle Canyon has delivered 99.43% of its combined targeted energy yield. Not a modelled projection, an audited outcome with Phase 2 running at 105.89% over its lifetime. In January and February 2026,
favourable weather plus a well-maintained system pushed output over 120% of target in a single month.
That consistency is what protects IRR. Every kWh produced on schedule is a kWh that doesn’t need to be recovered later, and every avoided breakdown is downtime that never hits the return.
